Training Tuesday Part 5
Empathy in Communication
I heard a phrase the other day “The measure of a man/woman, is how they treat someone who is absolutely of no use to them” this got me thinking about a skill I speak about everyday which some selectively use, Empathy!
So, what is Empathy?
Empathy is an emotional and thinking muscle, that becomes a stronger skill the more we use it. Also, it’s the ability to be able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and try to understand how they are feeling to be able to adapt your behaviour and communication style to suit.
Having empathy doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll want to help someone in need, though it’s often a first step toward a compassionate action.
Empathy comes more naturally to some than it does to others. However, by taking time to truly understand the picture of what it is like for the other person and imagine ourselves in their place, we will gain insights and forge better connections to those around us.
Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, Hearing with the ears of another and Feeling with the heart of another.
Training comes in many forms all of which can help with job satisfaction, it can be having a mentor to work alongside you, it could also be on the job coaching, it can also be support from your manager and team. Ultimately though, personal development is also your responsibility. Not all businesses have dedicated training programmes so over the coming weeks I hope to give you an insight into what can be achieved and if you wish to hear more you can connect with me through LinkedIN and you can also follow my new LinkedIN page by clicking these links.
I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you!
